Tribujh, the Art behind Triangles

From ancient Warli art and paintings that date back to 3000 BC, to the most renowned modern artists like Raza, triangles have been a source of inspiration, romance, intrigue and mysticism. The Warli artists used this most basic shape to depict the glorious spectacles of life spanning weddings, festivities, hunting scenes and even funerals. Through generations the mighty triangle has encapsulated Indian artists, including S. H. Raza, the master of abstraction, who used triangles in vivid hues to express concepts of time and space.

The Rustic Charm of Triangles

Going to the beginnings of our art, triangles, along with circles, were the first shape that we started drawing, as symbols to depict mountains and conical trees. Over time as our art evolved, we used them to represent more complex ideas including the spirit, the mind and the human body. An upward pointing triangle represented ‘Purusha’ while a downward oriented triangle was used to depict ‘Prakriti’. Two triangles balanced atop each other was used to represent universal harmony. And when they were unstable, it suggested conflict.
